The Mind Shift: When The Whole World Is Negative

It all began back in March 2020. Life as we knew it already had it’s fair share of ups and down, but then it hit……GLOBAL PANDEMIC! You would have thought the World had stopped in an instant and people froze in their tracks. That’s frozen state of shock didn’t last long. The human population, as advanced as we’d like to think we are, were not anywhere ready for the negativity, stress, and emotional devastation that COVID-19 brought with it. Coping skills? Communication skills? Patience? Tolerance? Positive Mindset? These concepts were buried deep. It was about physical survival. What people fail to remember is the mind-body connection. Stress overload weakens the immune system so what better time to buckle up and make that mindset shift. Having a negative mindset in a global pandemic is an automatic and natural reaction. It takes cognitive effort to make that shift into a positive mindset. I know. You’re thinking, “What is there to be positive about during a global pandemic?” Well, I can tell you what I felt positive about. I found the small things in each day. I had the opportunity to have both my children learning from my home where I knew I had at least a little more control in the chaotic situation. I felt positive that even though I am an essential worker, I was given the opportunity to work from the safety of my home. I felt positive that I had more free time to cook, spend time in my backyard, do things around the house, pick up hobbies, learn things, and reinvent my relationships with my sons. If it wasn’t for COVID-19, I’m positive that my life would be more chaotic from the sense that my priorities were not where they needed to be. That is a prime example of finding the good in the bad. The ability to find the good in a bad situation is key to developing a positive mindset. Some other strategies to begin shifting your mindset beginning your day by using positive affirmations. When you speak positivity to yourself, you receive positivity. Here is a challenging technique for many. When you encounter a failure, evaluate the process and turn it into a learning experience. Instead of….I failed. What can I learn from this experience to make my life better? For a positive mindset, it is important to focus on the present. Why? The present is the only moment in time we have control over. Yesterday is done so close the book. Tomorrow isn’t here and who knows how many things can change before it gets here so why waste precious energy worrying about it???? Last, but certainly not least. To foster and maintain a positive mindset, surround yourself with positive people. They will feed your soul with the positivity you’ve lacked and you will reflect their mindset in your thoughts, words, and actions.
